Interlibrary Loan Policy

Marina (Maryland Interlibrary loan) Borrowing:

The Resource Sharing Agreement that governs Marina policies supports each Library system to manage material borrowed through Marina for their customers as they would manage their own material borrowed by their customers, with a few exceptions.

  1. Each Marina library determines what kinds of materials they will lend.
  2. Marina items are checked out using the same lending period we use for AACPL materials.
  3. Marina items must be returned to an AACPL branch.
  4. Marina items may be renewed two times.
  5. You may only renew a Marina title for the customer who took the item out.  A renewal may not be used to transfer the item to another customer.
  6. You may renew a Marina item that is overdue.

If items are not available through Marina, staff will help the customer search for the item through other sources.

Marina Bills and Fees:

  1. In accordance with the Maryland Public Library Resource Sharing Agreement, Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL) collects and keeps all lost and damaged fees related to Marina items borrowed by AACPL customers.
  2. AACPL policies and procedures for lost item charges, missing item charges, and charges for damaged materials apply to all Marina items borrowed by AACPL customers.

OCLC (a global library network) Borrowing:

Every OCLC lender creates their own resource-sharing policies.  These policies cover what they will lend, what they might charge for lending, the lending period, if they will renew and how long they will renew, how they want lost material handled, etc.

AACPL honors the lenders’ policies.

OCLC loan periods:

  1. OCLC lenders include the due date when they ship an item.
  2. OCLC lenders may recall their item before their stated due date.
  3. OCLC lenders may designate if the item may only be used in the library.

OCLC Returns:

  1. OCLC items must be returned to an AACPL branch.

OCLC Renewals:

  1. The lender will usually indicate on the request paperwork if they will not renew an item, and ILL staff will then note that information.
  2. ILL staff must request a renewal from the lender for any OCLC item.
  3. An item may only be renewed to the original borrower.
  4. The customer must request a renewal on or before their original due date.
  5. Customers may request a maximum of one renewal.
  6. If the lender does not grant a renewal, the item must be returned.

If items are not available through OCLC, staff will offer further assistance as needed.

OCLC Bills and Fees:

  1. AACPL collects and keeps lost and damaged fees for OCLC materials.
  2. If an AACPL customer loses or damages an OCLC item borrowed for that customer and checked out by that customer, ILL contacts the lending library to determine the cost.  The customer will be billed the amount that the lending library designates.
  3. ILL Recovery Fee is the term AACPL uses for any lending fee a customer agrees to pay when ILL cannot find an item from a free lender.  AACPL customers agree to a certain amount they are willing to pay in this rare situation.
