AACPL Hosts Special Events to Honor Black History Month 

(January 26, 2024 –Annapolis, MD) Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL) is offering the following Black History Month programs throughout February. 

African Dance Through the Decades 

Saturday, February 3 at 2 pm at Discoveries: the Library at the Mall  

Participants will experience African history through movement and stories from Dance Solutions Outreach.  

 

Be an Artist like Alma Thomas 

Saturday, February 3 at 2 pm at Eastport-Annapolis Neck Library 

Kids will learn about local African American artist and activist Alma Thomas, hear her life story and engage in art projects inspired by her artistic style. 

 

Nyame Nti West African Drummers 

Saturday, February 3 at 2 pm at Glen Burnie Library  

All who attend are sure to enjoy a high-energy, uplifting and engaging African drumming performance that focuses on Africa’s rich history and culture. 

 

A Visit to Kofi’s Village 

Thursday, February 15 at 6:30 pm at Broadneck Library 

Participants will explore the sight and sound of various African percussion instruments, through rhythmic drumming patterns, storytelling, call and response, and movement experiences to become part of the gathering of a West African community!  

 

Paint Like...Jean-Michel Basquiat 

Mountain Road Library on Wednesday, February 7 at 6:30 pm 

Learn about the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and create art in his style. Registration is required.

They Pointed Them North: Black Jacks, Iron Furnaces, and the Underground Railroad 

Saturday, February 10 at 2 pm at Discoveries: the Library at the Mall  

Join Ranger Tim from The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park to learn about the vital roles of Black Jacks and iron furnaces on the Underground Railroad. 

 

The ABC's of Hip Hop with Baba Bomani

Wednesday, February 28 at 6:30 pm at Maryland City at Russett Library 

Kids are invited to use rhythm and rhyme to explain basic reading and math concepts while breaking and discovering how to rap the alphabet backward. Learn crucial active listening skills and Black history. 

 

African American Genealogy 

Thursday, February 22 at 7 pm at Crofton Library  

Hannah Lane, research archivist at the Maryland State Archives, will share tips on researching African American genealogy using state and local resources. 

 

Discovery Theater presents: “Lions of Industry, Mothers of Invention” 

Saturday, February 24 at 11 am at Discoveries: the Library at the Mall 

Kids are invited to join a science fair of G.W. Carver’s inventions using the peanut, hear Booker T. Washington’s great oratory and be inspired by the story of the world’s first female, self-made millionaire, Madame C.J. Walker! 

 

Black History's Groundbreaking Geniuses 

Saturday, February 24 at 10:30 am at Eastport-Annapolis Neck Library 

Enjoy a show by Bright Star Touring Theatre about amazing characters from Black history including surgeon Daniel Hale Williams, mathematician Dorothy Vaughan, literary geniuses Ralph Ellison and Maya Angelou, and the artistic brilliance of Alvin Ailey.
