988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. It provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals in the United States.

Lifeline phone number (1-800-273-8255) will always remain available to people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis.

"Currently, a small percentage of 988 Lifeline callers require activation of the 911 system, and many of those are done with the consent and cooperation of the caller. This occurs when there is an imminent risk to someone’s life that cannot be reduced during the 988 Lifeline call."
