At AACPL, we take those lyrics to heart. Beginning on June 1st, we invite you to spend “Summer @ Your Library” with this year’s theme – “All Together Now.”
Since 1948, AACPL has held a reading challenge in an effort to engage readers of all ages and foster literacy and learning even in the summer months outside of school. Studies show that, on average, students will lose about 25% of their reading and math gains from the previous school year if they are not engaged in some sort of learning activity over summer vacation.
At the library, we make this easy and fun by working learning into our annual Summer Quest – a free game where participants of all ages can choose their daily reading or learning goal and earn prizes by reaching milestones throughout a 40-day period. Summer also presents an opportunity to kick back and enjoy time with family and friends and spread a little kindness in our world. This year we are partnering with Kindness Grows Here, a local organization fostering kindness in children. Kindness Grows Here has provided us with stories of local youth who have gone the extra mile to spread kindness through acts small and large alike. These stories are featured on our Summer Quest, as well as some of their favorite books about how we can celebrate differences to create a kinder, more thoughtful world.
