Sleepless: Volume One by Sarah Vaughn puts the reader through a merry-go-round of emotions. The book follows the main character, Lady “Poppy” Pyppenia as she navigates through grief, longing, and romance as she deals with the antics of the arrogant royals around her. By her side, she has Sir Cyrenic: a knight under the Sleepless vow.
I’ll start off by saying this is one of the most enjoyable books I’ve ever read. It’s a graphic novel, so there are illustrations. But the drawings don’t make the characters feel any less real or relatable. Matter of fact, it does the opposite of that. Lady Pyppenia is a woman of a dark complexion, and the people around her vary in skin tones and appearance. The characters aren’t a uniform bunch and the representation is quite satisfying. Other than that, the characters still feel very real personality-wise.
Though it is a fantasy book, the reader can connect with characters and easily find relation or distaste. The plot isn’t too difficult to grasp and while intricate, it isn’t confusing. The book is engaging and it keeps you on your toes with anticipation of what’ll happen next. The dialogue was very regal and taught me a couple of new words, but it isn’t too tidy either. That’s what makes it feel so real. The book seems like its target audience is a younger crowd, but I feel as if anyone can enjoy it. It does a good job fitting into multiple genres like romance, action, and drama.
