Scythe by Neal Shusterman

By Audrey W., Crofton Middle School

Scythe is a book about the world in the future, no more people going hungry, no more people homeless. No more diseases and sickness, and no more death. All forms of death have been eradicated except for death at the hands of a scythe, the only group allowed to take life from the world, or known as being gleaned. Scythes are treated as kings and queens. Money is of no value to them and they control the people with fear, which is not what the scythedom was founded on. Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice a scythe and get a glimpse of what the scythedom has become, and what consequences it will lead to in the future.

This book by Neal Shusterman was done amazingly, the plot kept you on the edge of your seat, not letting you stop until the book was finished. It was funny, and it was heartfelt. It connects the characters and the readers, with some teens being able to relate to the feelings in the book. It did a great job of exploring the idea of a world in the future, and I would recommend this book to anyone who likes action, fantasy, mystery, and biopunk. This book is just the start of an amazing series.
