Salt Magic by Hope Larson

Hope Larson’s Salt Magic is a spectacular graphic novel that follows a young protagonist named Vonceil as she pledges to save her family’s farm from an evil witch and reverse the withering curse that was bestowed upon the aforementioned farm.

The Eisner Award-winning novel is an impressive tale that portrays the desperation that comes along with prioritizing family and values. Not to be ostentatious or a kiss-up, but I thoroughly enjoy this book. The colors used by Rebecca Mock in the illustrations are very pastel, which makes the story extremely aesthetically pleasing and fun to read. Anyone of any age could read this book and enjoy it. The main character is extremely relatable and likeable. Practically anyone can immerse themselves into the story.

I could speak highly about the book for hours on end, virtually everything is flawless, except for the ending. If you’re a fan of super over-the-top endings, then perhaps the book isn’t necessarily for you. I’m not one to care for endings, and I found it a bit anticlimactic. Regardless of that, I would still recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It’s a gorgeous book with an interesting and highly enjoyable plot. Hope Larson did a wonderful job with world-building and the illustrator, Rebecca Mock, illustrated the characters and world spectacularly.
