In the Orbit of You by Ashley Schumacher

By Madison P., Meade Senior High School

In the Orbit of You is about these two teenagers who, when they were kids, used to play together. That was until Sam moved away and they never saw each other again – not until Nova moved and a school personality test reunited them.

One of my favorite aspects of the book was both Nova and Sam getting to know each other again and catching up on what they missed in each other’s lives. For example, Sam recreated the broken fence between both their houses, just like it was when they were kids. This book really did a good job of exploring domestic abuse in households, describing how much it can affect someone for the rest of their lives. It also explores the themes of moving from one place to another and how you must make new friends (or not even that, just being alone and by yourself because you don’t want to have to say goodbye.)

What I didn't like about the book was the cliché jealous girlfriend stereotype and how Nova and Sam assumed his girlfriend was going to the jealous girlfriend who didn't want him hanging around Nova. She didn't even care when she met her. She brought her into the friend group. But even after that I thought the book was good. I would recommend it to people who like the trope of star-crossed lovers and a sweet little romance.
