Orange by Ichigo Takano

by Sydney W., Annapolis High School

This manga series follows a girl, Naho Takamiya, and her group of friends. One day Naho receives a letter from herself 10 years in the future, listing requests and regrets that her future self wants to change. These regrets have everything to do with a new transfer student, Kakeru Naruse, who Naho and her friends befriend, but Kakeru is more troubled than he looks. She has to deal with her future self’s regrets and also navigate the struggles of her friend group and day-to-day life.

This story blew me away. It was the first manga I ever read, and its story was excellent. It’s a very emotion-filled story, with elements of slice of life, romance, fantasy and sci-fi. The characters are memorable and relatable. In addition, their bonds and relationships are very well-written. I can’t think of anything I didn’t like, except that it ended too soon. I would have liked more of the story. I would recommend this for teens who like romance, fantasy and slice of life stories. It is an emotional story and has heavier topics so I wouldn’t recommend this for a younger audience, but it is a must-read for those in middle school and high school.
