Mara Fitzgerald’s, Into the Midnight Void, takes the reader on a rollercoaster of emotions. The book takes you on an adventure with the main character, Emmanuella. As you journey through different worlds, catacombs, and alleyways, you learn a lot about Emmanuella, and also her friends and foes alike.
Though fiction, they all feel highly relatable. The characters exuded so much emotional vulnerability, I found tears welling in my eyes as I flipped through the pages. At times, you wonder if anybody is safe from Emmanuella. Reading this book there were so many moments where I exclaimed, “ohhh,” because of how the author utilizes symbolism in such a marvelous and magnificent way.
The book drags the reader through tragedy, romance, pain, and gore. The book invokes an array of different emotions, including adoration, hatred, malevolence (for certain characters), and despondency. At times you might feel all of those heavy, heavy emotions while reading just a singular page. The entire time I was reading my eyes were glued to the book, sliding to the edge of my seat to read more, more, and more.
I can only sing praises for this book. But, of course, everyone enjoys a different genre of book. I’d say this book is great for a teenage audience. It’s a bit PG-13 and caters to more mature audiences. But it also has just the right amount of angst which is what makes it seem so suitable for middle school readers. Also, if you’re a big fan of relationship drama and fantasy fiction, this book fits perfectly in both of those genres.
