Xenniah G., Old Mill High School
Love in English by Maria E. Andreu follows a teenager named Ana who moves to the United States from Argentina, struggling to learn English while navigating the complications of high school. This novel explores themes of belonging, adaptation, culture, and identity. Ana faces cultural differences, tries to fit in, and learns how to express herself. Throughout her journey, Ana finds love, friendship, and her voice – which she had all along.
During the story, the characters truly did feel real to me because, while I have never been through what Ana experiences, I know it is other peoples’ realities. The story mainly kept me on the edge of my seat because I was intrigued by the way Ana found herself. There wasn't much to dislike about the book; I think it's very up to date and displays empathy to those who live through this type of situation.
One thing I disliked, though, was the stereotyping. (I think it's very stereotypical to display those coming in from international countries to the United States as people who “don’t fit in,” or as people who lose themselves by trying to be different.) It would've been nice to see Ana just finding her way in a new place and meeting new people without an issue.
As for the audience, I think teens who have struggled with fitting in can best relate to this story. I don’t think this would be a good book for older audiences.
