The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

By Sydney W., Annapolis High School

Set in the 1800’s in Europe, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue is a book about a teenager, Henry Montague or Monty for short, embarking on a “last hurrah” trip through Europe before he is supposed to take over his family duties for his father. Along with his sister Felicity and his best friend, and crush, Percy, their trip sets off, and they encounter more trouble than they bargain for.

This book has queer/LGBTQ+ representation and handles topics like sexuality, race, disability and class, while still adhering to the time period of the story. Even though these things can create conflicts for the characters, they don’t let these things hold them back. In my opinion, this book is helping to normalize LGBTQ+ characters in historical fiction and fantasy stories. In addition, the characters are endearing and relatable, despite all their well-written flaws.
The only thing I dislike is that there are some moments I cringed with second-hand embarrassment while reading, but that was because of the character’s actions, not because of the writing.

Overall, those who want to read an LGBTQ+ and/or historical fiction book, then this book is definitely for you. Although, I wouldn’t recommend it for younger readers because it can touch on some mature topics. If you’re looking for LGBTQ+ representation and loveable but flawed characters, then this book if for you.
