Exploring the Art Exchange Boxes at AACPL

Libraries have long been a cornerstone of community learning, offering books, digital resources and innovative programs to inspire curiosity and creativity. At the Brooklyn Park Library, Crofton Library and Linthicum Library, a new initiative is adding a colorful dimension to this mission: Art Exchange Boxes. Partnering with the Chesapeake Arts Center (CAC), the library now hosts these unique boxes to foster artistic exploration and collaboration within the community. Here at AACPL the concept of Art Exchange Boxes is an exciting new addition to our community, allowing people to both share and explore art in a creative and accessible way. But what exactly are these boxes, how do they work and why are they being offered at the library? Let's dive into the details of this innovative project.

What are Art Exchange Boxes?
Art Exchange Boxes are communal spaces where people can take and leave art supplies, or art in general. Think of them as a "little free library" but for the arts! These boxes contain a variety of materials—paints, brushes, paper and more—all available for anyone to use. The goal is to encourage creativity by removing barriers to accessing art supplies.

These boxes are stocked with various art tools, allowing individuals to contribute and take supplies, creating an ever-evolving collection of creative tools for everyone to explore.

How do they work?

A very simple concept-

  1. Give: Donate supplies you no longer need.
  2. Take: Pick up supplies for your next project.
  3. Create: Use the materials to explore your artistic side, whether you are a beginner or a seasoned artist.

CAC ensures that each box is weather-sealed and accessible to the public. They supply starter kits containing art supplies and artwork when the boxes are first delivered. Community members are encouraged to replenish the boxes with new supplies and art pieces over time.

Information about how to Sponsor a box, Host a box, Fill a box, or Build a box can be found on the CAC website or by visiting participating library branches. .

Why are they being offered at AACPL?

The AACPL is more than a place to borrow books—it's a hub for lifelong learning and self-expression. Libraries naturally align with the idea of accessible arts because they’re friendly spaces open to all. When the CAC proposed the Art Exchange Project, the library was an obvious choice as a hosting location. Together, we aim to make art creation and exploration easier and more approachable for the community.

What can you find in an Art Exchange Box?

A colorful, wooden art exchange box stands on a wooden post beside a road. The box features vibrant geometric patterns and is labeled "Art Exchange." Background includes trees and utility lines under clear skies.

The contents of the Art Exchange Boxes are ever-changing, reflecting the generosity and creativity of the community. Items might include:

  • Paint and brushes
  • Sketchbooks and drawing tools
  • Craft supplies
  • Recycled materials

The Role of the Chesapeake Arts Center

The Chesapeake Arts Center has been instrumental in bringing this project to life. They conceptualized the idea, secured funding and created the art exchange boxes. They also collaborate with the library to stock the boxes and ensure their continued success. This initiative was launched as part of Arts Month, highlighting the importance of creative expression within the community.

AACPL and CAC have a longstanding partnership. From attending Art in the Park events to hosting storytimes and Makerspace meet-ups, we've worked together to bring enriching programs to the community. The Art Exchange Boxes are just the latest in a series of creative collaborations.

Art Exchange Box Locations

Currently, Brooklyn Park Library, along with a few other pilot locations (Brooklyn Park Library, Crofton Library and Linthicum Library) is hosting these Art Exchange Boxes. Whether they expand to additional libraries will depend on the Chesapeake Arts Center’s resources and capacity to grow the program. For now, the community is encouraged to take full advantage of this innovative opportunity.

CAC is constructing eight Art Exchange Boxes to be placed in various locations across West and North Anne Arundel County as part of Anne Arundel Arts Month in June. But for now they have started pilots for the program. Locations include Linthicum, Brooklyn Park and Crofton. Each box will be filled with art supplies and artworks provided by community members and CAC.

How can you get Involved?

Local artists and community members play a vital role in the success of the art exchange boxes. Here is how you can contribute:

  • Donate used art boxes
  • Spread the word to friends and family
  • use materials to create something nice and share your creations with others to inspire even more
  • If you are part of a business or organization, consider applying to host an art exchange box

Why it matters

Art Exchange Boxes go beyond just providing supplies. They’re about fostering a culture of sharing, inspiring creativity and making art accessible to everyone. Whether you’re trying out a new hobby, reigniting a passion for painting or simply looking for a way to unwind, these boxes offer something for everyone.

Stop by the participating locations and discover how the art exchange boxes can spark your imagination. With the support of the Chesapeake Arts Center and the local community, the possibilities are endless!
