Dragonfly Girl by Marti Leimbach

Dragonfly Girl is a book about a genius- but unlike other commonly written geniuses, Kira is only good at science. In order to make some money to feed her mother’s loan shark, she enters science competitions, and through a twist of fate, catches the eye of Dr. Munn, one of the greatest scientists of her time.

The characters felt real and interesting, except for Munn’s assistant, whose only trait is “handsome man”. The character development for everyone else is very real however and fleshed out. This book was engaging and interesting to read, as it eventually picked up some speed after part one. The main character frustrated me in the beginning because of how much of a pushover she was, but she does eventually grow. The romance side plot was also frustrating for a few minutes, but that also smoothed out near the end and became a little enjoyable to read about. The major plot points and even the smaller ones eventually tie all together in a nice little bundle. While the ending is a cliffhanger, it is bearable, especially since there’s a sequel coming out soon!

I think that older readers, especially those that like science, would like this book. It gives off “The Martian” vibes.
