Dear Evan Hansen by Val Emmich

Avi W., Arundel High School

This book is based off the Broadway show Dear Evan Hansen. Evan Hansen is a modern day teen struggling with really bad social anxiety. He sees a therapist who tells him to write letters to himself to boost his confidence. His mom constantly encourages him but she’s rarely around. One day someone reads the letter and dies by suicide. Afterwards, Evan has to pretend he’s someone's friend to ease the pain of the parents. Evan even gains a new family in the process.

I like this book because it talks about the struggles of being a teenager in this generation. My favorite part of the book is when Evan interacts with his crush even if it was temporary. I also like how the book changes the point of view every couple of chapters. Personally, I didn’t dislike anything about the book. Throughout this book, you really get to know Evan and his feelings. This book really inspires you to just be yourself even in today’s society. Being your true self can be hard but if you have the right people in your life, it can help you be the best version of yourself. If you like the book, you should definitely check out the movie or Broadway show!
