Dance of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson

By Allison T., Crofton High School

I started Dance of Thieves in a desperate attempt to get out of a reading slump and it was probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I was not expecting this book to have every trope that I love, but it did. I found myself lost in the pages of a found family and rooting for the enemies to turn lovers.

A lot of things happen quickly in this book that will make you check the page number in concern but have faith that the ending is well timed and not rushed. This book had non-stop action I was hooked on all 800+ pages. However, there is quite a lot of violence, so read with caution.
It had everything that I love in a YA novel from a morally grey protagonist and love interest to side characters that I actually cared about. The dual POV of the story adds something extra to the depth of the characters.

This book has its own language which is really cool. The author created it by meshing together modern languages to help emphasize the fact that the story takes place in a society that comes after us.

I don’t really like action books that have weak characters, but I didn’t have to worry about that because practically every character in this book is professionally trained in some fighting style or another. It's also the first in a duology. I recommend this to anyone that loves strong and dangerous female leads.
