Busch Annapolis Library is offering a unique and valuable resource to the community — a state-of-the-art driving simulator! Made possible through the Crosby Grant, this initiative aims to provide teens, young adults and other members of the community with an opportunity to practice driving in a safe and controlled environment.
How the Driving Simulator Came to Busch Annapolis Library
The idea for the simulator was brought to life by Gabby Norton, a librarian at Busch Annapolis Library who was inspired by similar programs in other libraries. With the support of Diane Benner, Branch Manager of Busch Annapolis Library, they worked to secure funding and bring this innovative tool to Annapolis. Their goal was to break down barriers for those who might not have easy access to driving lessons or a vehicle to practice with.
Benefits and Community Engagement
The driving simulator serves multiple purposes; it helps new drivers gain confidence behind the wheel and allows individuals to practice driving in different conditions, such as in the rain, at night or on busy urban streets. It also provides a cost-free supplement to traditional driving lessons, which can be expensive. While simulator hours do not count toward Maryland's required driving hours, the experience gained can still be incredibly beneficial.
Since its introduction, the simulator has been used by a wide range of individuals. While it was originally intended for teens and young adults, we have had drivers of all ages use it since its unveiling. One particularly notable case involved a stroke survivor who used the simulator to help regain motor skills. Additionally, parents have expressed gratitude for the program, as it provides teenagers with a safe and constructive way to practice driving skills.
Features and Realistic Driving Scenarios

The driving simulator offers a variety of scenarios, from basic skill-building exercises like braking and turning to more complex challenges like navigating heavy traffic in difficult weather conditions. Real-time feedback is available in certain modes, alerting drivers to common mistakes such as speeding or failing to stay in their lane. Those who plan to use the simulator long-term can even create an account to track their progress over multiple sessions.
Accessibility has been considered, with an adjustable seat, audio and visual on-screen instructions and a headphone jack for users who prefer a quieter, more immersive experience. Library staff members are also available to assist users who may need additional support.
Programs and Future Plans
While the library has not yet implemented formal programs centered around the simulator, an open house event was held after its launch to introduce the community to the resource. Plans are being considered for summer programs aimed at teens, a popular time for many to begin working toward obtaining their learner's permit and driver's license. The Maryland Highway Safety Office has shown interest in the simulator. The library has also been receiving frequent visits from Mary T Inc., a neuro-rehabilitation group that assists adults with brain injuries, and we've helped them take advantage of our driving simulator as they have several individuals in their care that use it to assist with learning or relearning their driving motor skills whenever they visit. Another group called Maryland Reentry Resource Center has been referring individuals who need to re-obtain their driver's licenses and need extra driving practice to Busch Annapolis to use the driving simulator.
Positive Community Impact and Encouragement for First Time Users

One of the highlights for library staff was presenting the simulator at the 2024 For the Love of the Library event, where it received overwhelmingly positive feedback. Additionally, interest has extended beyond Annapolis, with inquiries coming from as far as Washington, D.C. It is believed that the Busch Annapolis Library is the first public library in Maryland to offer a driving simulator, making it a standout feature in the state’s library system.
For those hesitant to try it, the library offers a welcoming, no-pressure environment. Customers aged 14 and up can drop in at any time for a walk-in appointment — simply visit the Welcome Desk to sign in. Features such as a fan to reduce motion sickness and free earbuds for immersive sound enhance the experience. Library staff are always available to answer questions and provide assistance.
