During a massive 50-year celebration of a meteor passing a traveler boy and his sisters have someone use magic to get them into a city but the spirit that rules the city takes offense at that and takes one of his sisters hostage and tells him to kill the princess if he wants her to survive. He tricks his way into the competition as the champion of life and progresses through it but falls in love with her in the process. The princess, on the other hand, just lost her mother and learned that if she kills a king and takes his heart, she can be brought back, causing her to offer her hand in marriage to the winner.
I really liked how intricate and elaborate the magic system was and how well the book showed the princess’s traumatic childhood. I disliked how the twist villain was handled as, given how loose the rules of the magic are, there was not really a way to tell that they were the villain beforehand. All in all, I would recommend A Song of Wraiths and Ruin to any reader who likes romance, high fantasy, and, to a lesser extent, mystery books.
