Sick Kids in Love details two chronically ill kids befriending each other and falling in love. Isabel deals with Rheumatoid Arthritis and doesn’t believe in dating. Sasha has Gaucher’s disease and understands Isabel better than any of her “healthy” friends do. They meet in the waiting room at a hospital and immediately hit it off. As Sasha helps Isabel come to terms with her chronic illness, she falls in love with him.

Isabel and Sasha feel so incredibly real. They both were well developed, and by the end of the second chapter, I was rooting for them to get together. The dialogue is very well written, and it doesn’t feel like stereotypical “teen-speak.” My only complaint is that parts of the book felt a little fast, like towards the end of the book, Isabel starts going through a rough patch, and it just felt a little too quick for me.

Initially, I picked up this book because of the chronic illness representation, and it delivered that amazingly. As someone who is close to many with chronic pain and deals with hEDS, reading the descriptions of Isabel’s and and her thoughts surrounding RA felt accurate and incredibly close to what my friends and family have gone through. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Ableism is so built into our society, and this book breaks down all those walls. It is a painfully realistic view of what it actually is like to be chronically ill and disabled, and it doesn’t sugar coat it or gloss over it. This is an incredibly powerful and important read.
